The Vincent L. Hawkinson Foundation is a private, non-profit organization established by the Hawkinson family of Chicago. The foundation was created with the intention of helping students pursue their dreams after high school. The Foundation offers scholarships to high school seniors who display leadership and perseverance throughout their academic careers.

In order for students to be eligible for a scholarship, they must be graduating seniors or home-schooled students who will be enrolling into an accredited two or four-year university in the fall of 2022. Applicants are not required to submit essays or any sort of admission materials besides academic records and transcripts. There is no cost associated with applying for the Vincent L. Hawkinson Foundation.

Who is Vincent L. Hawkinson?

As pastor of Grace University Lutheran Church in Minneapolis for more than 30 years, Rev. Hawkinson believed it was the duty of religious leaders to stand up and speak out against injustices and violence in the world. Upon his retirement in 1988, members of his congregation founded the Vincent L. Hawkinson Foundation to perpetuate the tireless spirit of this advocate for justice.

Effective March 28, 2017, the Vincent L. Hawkinson Foundation for Peace and Justice will be the Hawkinson Fund at Grace University Lutheran Church. The Fund keeps its dream alive by recognizing those who have made long-term contributions to the causes of peace and justice with the Hawkinson Honorary Award, and by encouraging students who have demonstrated a commitment to peace and justice with the Hawkinson Scholarship.

Vincent L. Hawkinson Foundation Scholarship The Vincent L. Hawkinson Foundation was created by Jim and Vicki Hawkinson. Jim, a former teacher, has made it his mission to help other educators succeed and grow as professionals through scholarships like these. However, to date, they have awarded over $3 million in grants and scholarships to students who are pursuing teaching careers or advanced degrees that will prepare them for leadership roles within their education system.

They want to change our society by helping teachers be teachers rather than fundraisers. This gives him a chance to truly see what he has done with his life. He wants every teacher he meets at any point of their career to be fully supported both financially and emotionally so they can do what they came into teaching for—teach!

Furthermore, The Hawkinson Fund for Peace & Justice is an annual scholarship awarded to Minnesota students who demonstrate a commitment to peace and justice. Past scholarship recipients have worked toward a variety of causes including international healthcare, LGBT equality, Native American rights, domestic violence, human rights, and health disparities in low-income communities. Hawkinson Foundation Scholarships are awarded to both undergraduate and graduate students, and cost between $3,000 and $5,000 each.

Eligibility and Requirements

  • Applicant must be a resident of (or currently attending school in) Minnesota.
  • The applicant must have received a high school diploma or GED before the due date of this application.  (In other words, the 2022 scholarship is NOT available to current high school students.  If interested, please consider applying in a future year.)
  • Scholarship finalists must be available for an electronic (Zoom, Facebook).
  • Scholarship awards will be announced on or before June 30.
  • Scholarships are awarded without regard to religious affiliation.
  • Scholarship recipients should submit a brief report by June 15, 2023, describing how the scholarship funds were used.
  • All decisions by the Hawkinson Scholarship Selection Committee are final.

  • Demonstrated courage in carrying out your convictions about peace and social justice.
  • Displayed ongoing commitment to, and leadership in, a peace or justice organization.
  • Served as a role model for others to move society into new realms of thought and practice regarding peace and social justice.

Also, address:

  • How this scholarship will be used,
  • This award would affect your future work for peace and justice, and
  • How this award will promote peace and justice for others.

However, Hawkinson Foundation Scholarships have been awarded each year to undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate a commitment to peace and justice. Undergrad and graduate student scholarships have typically been $3,000-5,000 each.
