The dairy industry has been expanding rapidly in Australia over the past few years, and this growth shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. This rapid expansion means that more workers are needed to handle the new demand, both locally and from foreign countries. The industry has become particularly popular among immigrants who want to take advantage of their working holiday visas and live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world while working hard to reach their personal goals of financial success. These jobs offer opportunities to work hard while living well on the beautiful continent of Australia, so they’re bound to attract applicants from all around the world!

Dairy Farming

Most people dream of traveling to the land down under and spending time exploring the beautiful beaches and countryside, but with such great wages on offer in the agricultural sector in Australia, many people are drawn to apply for jobs in farming and livestock rearing. If you want to move to Australia as an ex-pat, dairy farming might be your best job option! Let’s take a look at some of the reasons why this profession might just be one of the most lucrative career paths out there.

Meet the Van Laere Family. Five years ago, they moved from Belgium to Australia and became dairy farmers in Victoria, Australia. I recently had the chance to talk with them about what attracted them to become dairy farmers and whether it was worth it or not. Their story is an interesting one, so let’s get started!

About Dairy Farming

By producing over $20 billion annually, agriculture is by far one of Australia’s most vital industries. Some of its top exports include wool, sugarcane, fruit, and vegetables as well as dairy products. In fact, many experts have pointed out that if it weren’t for its agricultural industry, Australia would be a very small and poor nation. As such, it should come as no surprise that farmers are looking to bring in a number of people from other countries to help with various tasks required to keep farms running smoothly.

In fact, agriculture takes up a sizable portion of all job openings advertised on SEEK, a popular job searching site. As of March 2017, there were more than 1,100 job vacancies posted on SEEK that fell under agriculture and another 3,300 or so that were based in different areas related to dairy farming. For example, cow/calf operators ensure cows are bred as often as possible and are producing sufficient milk. Dairy farmers on the other hand tend to focus on milking their cows rather than breeding them. Whatever area you choose to specialize in within dairy farming, it’s important to note that all jobs will require some sort of farming experience before being hired full-time by farms.

What it takes to be a dairy farmer

To be a dairy farmer, you must be able to work with cattle. They are sometimes temperamental and don’t always do what you want them to do—which can lead to injuries or even death. Due to modern agricultural laws, safety needs to be top-of-mind. You also need to know how to properly feed your cattle and maintain their living environment. Working outside all day is not glamorous, but it is necessary if you want your business and team to thrive. If you’re willing to put in the work, however, there are endless rewards that come from being self-employed as a dairy farmer.

It takes time and commitment to successfully run a dairy farm. You must be dedicated to maintaining safety practices, feeding your cows, and growing your business. Most importantly, you must love working with animals and have an understanding of how to properly take care of them. Without these skills, you won’t last long as a dairy farmer!

How to get started as a dairy farmer

A dairy farm is a commercial enterprise whose primary business is milk production. Traditionally, dairy farms were differentiated from other types of farms by their focus on cattle and more specifically dairy cows, however new farming practices and products such as goat cheese have created additional opportunities. Dairy cows are used to produce milk which is processed into a variety of dairy products such as butter, yogurt, kefir, cheese, and ice cream. Many countries around the world depend on dairying for a significant portion of their agricultural output. The income generated by dairying makes it one of New Zealand’s largest industries.

Benefits of dairy farming job

Here are the benefits:

(1) Starting with few skills and little money, it is easy to learn how to do a dairy farming job.

(2) Working on a dairy farm gives you a chance to be out of doors and enjoy the fresh air. The work is not too hard but can be physically challenging if done without care or thought. It requires physical strength that may come with age or with practice at other types of jobs. To take care of livestock, you must be able to lift heavy items, climb over fences and stand for long periods of time.

(3) Dairy farming offers regular hours that allow you time for sleep, rest, and family life without putting your career at risk because you cannot work nights or weekends unless others are willing to cover your shifts during normal business hours.

Dairy farming dominates job listings

Dairy jobs are in great demand in Australia, thanks to the growing popularity of milk and dairy products, and an industry that rewards productivity and perseverance. In addition to rewarding its workforce, dairy farming also boosts local economies and provides a range of job opportunities. Around 6000 dairy farms operate across the country, many of which are located near large towns. The increasing demand for dairy products has created a variety of lucrative new career opportunities, ranging from automation to herd health.

Here is the list:

1. Fruit picking

If you love the outdoors and are looking for a seasonal job, fruit picking may be perfect for you. This job is usually seasonal and requires physical strength. On some farms, you can even stay on the farm during harvest season. In exchange for your labor, you can be paid an hourly rate or a per-bin rate. As a rule, the higher your picks, the higher your salary. Accommodation is your responsibility, but many fruit picking farms have on-site accommodation or even a working hostel.

2. Milking cows

There are many benefits of working on a dairy farm. Dairy cows are an integral part of the agricultural supply chain, and their milking of them supports the dairy industry. Dairy cows have a range of benefits, including the chance to work alongside passionate farmers and gain a unique perspective on the industry. In South Australia, there are more than 206 dairy farms, producing around 500 million liters of milk per year.

3. Seasons to work on a farm

If you’re interested in working in the countryside, the many seasons on a farm offer an array of opportunities. In the summer, farmers monitor the crops, and may also bale hay and chop silage, a fermented corn product used for livestock feed. They will begin the calving season, and may also tend to the animals and monitor the weather conditions. In winter, some farms hire extra workers to help them plant crops.

The tasks on a farm vary by season and type. Most farms are small and run by the farmer and his family, but larger ones may hire migrant workers to help out. Many farms hire seasonal workers and/or permanent employees. The latter must ensure that all labor laws are followed, and may be required to provide housing for their workers. Depending on the size of the farm, the tasks may vary from simple to complex.

5. Recruitment agencies

In Australia, the main sectors for farm work are fresh produce, agriculture, fisheries, meat, and poultry production. Most of these jobs are paid on an hourly basis or per unit of produce harvested. Generally, farming jobs are seasonal, meaning that you should expect a longer workweek than you would for other types of employment. In addition, some farms may not have work on the weekends, or when it is too wet or rainy to harvest produce.

There are several benefits to working on a farm in Australia. It is cheap, you get to eat fresh foods, and you learn new skills. If you are on a working holiday visa, it may be possible to extend your stay if you take up a job in the agriculture industry. Additionally, these jobs often qualify you for a working holiday visa for a second year. So, you don’t have to leave your home to become an Australian farmer; these jobs are growing in popularity.

Conclusion

The great irony of these job listings is that if you try to find farm work on Australian job sites. Almost all of them say they’re only hiring local candidates. That seems odd, given how many farmers are desperate for extra help. And it’s even odder when you consider how many Aussies are struggling to find work. More Jobs in Canada 🍁

No matter who you are or where you live – if you have a strong back and can do hard physical labor. There will be lots of people looking to hire you. If a soft job like office work or restaurant management doesn’t appeal to you. Then why not give agriculture a shot? The pay may not be as high as some careers but few jobs have such interesting experiences attached. Good Luck!!!
