Here’s a short guide that will teach you how to apply and secure Canada study permit easily so you can leave, study, and work in Canada. We’ll not only show you how to apply for a Canadian study permit, but you’ll also get to know all the requirements to enable you to understand what you’re going for.

Apply for Canada Study Permit

That said, below are the things required before you apply for a study permit in Canada:

  • A valid international passport
  • Acceptance letter from a designated learning institution
  • Your biometrics
  • Proof of funds that you can support yourself while in Canada

NOTE: If you already leave in Canada and you’re applying for an initial study permit, you may be required to leave Canada to give your biometrics.

Study permit Canada

The study permit is a document we issue that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. Most foreign nationals need a study permit to study in Canada. You should apply before you travel to Canada. Your study permit is not a visa. It doesn’t let you enter Canada.

Most students studying for more than 6 months in Canada will need a Canadian Study Permit, as Canadian student visas are known. Students studying for 6 months or less do not need a Study Permit, but will need to apply for one if they wish to extend their studies or begin another course after their initial studies end.

We suggest you apply for a study permit as soon as you have a letter of acceptance from a Canadian college or university. It can take up to 3 months to get a study permit, depending on the country where you are applying. While many students think receiving a letter of acceptance is the hardest part of the pre-study abroad process, it can be even more difficult to land a student visa. However, Canada’s popularity makes it significantly harder to get a visa because of the high volume of applicants.

Applying for Study Permit outside Canada

Anyone that desires to study in Canada will have to apply for a study permit before traveling to Canada. You may equally apply for a study permit from within Canada, and in some cases, you’ll be allowed to apply when you get to Canada at the port of entry.

Therefore, you apply for your study permit online or by paper application at your closest Visa Application Center (VAC). You must read the Instruction Guide and complete the IMM 1294 form for outside Canada application (Application for Study permit Made Outside of Canada). If you are applying on paper we recommend that you apply for a visa from your home country. However, if you are legally admitted to the country you are currently in, you can apply at your nearest visa application Centre (VAC).

NOTE: Study permit applications may be faster for applicants living in India, China, and Vietnam or the Philippines if you apply via Student Direct Stream.

Furthermore, if you need a visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA), you won’t need to apply separately or pay extra fees as it’ll be automatically issued to you as your study permit.
