Cheapest Cell Phone Plans
Itโs no secret that cell phone plans are expensive. The average American pays $96 a month for cell phone serviceโ$1,456 a year. Yes, you might be able to negotiate lower rates with your current carrier, but even so, these rates are still higher than in many other countries and you may also be signed up for long-term contracts or have trouble switching providers when you need to.
Thankfully, there are plenty of cheaper options if you know where to look. We ranked five of them below to help you pick out which is right for you. No matter what your budget or needs are, we have something that can save some cashโwithout giving up quality service in return.
Ranking the 5 Cheapest Cell Phone Plans:
1) Mint Mobile
Mint Mobile is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that runs on T-Mobileโs network and offers four plans, ranging from $15 to $50 per month. According to TmoNewsโ research, Mint Mobile currently offers four options: $15/month gets you 1GB of 4G LTE data; $25/month gets you 3GB of 4G LTE data; $35/month gets you 10GB of 4G LTE data, and $50/month gets you 20GB of 4G LTE data. All plans include unlimited talk and text, but tethering is not included in any plan.
2) Tello
Tello is an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) operating on T-Mobileโs network. For just $12 a month, you get unlimited talk and text with no data caps, even during major storms. In fact, you get free calls to Mexico and Canada and free-roaming in Mexico if you want it. You also have access to T-Mobileโs Wi-Fi calling feature, which allows you to make calls or send texts over Wi-Fi (assuming there’s a public hotspot available). If that wasn’t enough to make Tello your new favorite cell phone provider, subscribers also get 2GB of LTE data per month that they can use anywhere in North Americaโwithout paying any roaming fees.
3) Verizon
Verizon is a fantastic choice if youโre someone who travels frequently or spends a lot of time at home. The carrier has plans starting as low as $20 per month, so if you go over your allotted minutes, you wonโt be paying much more than what youโre already paying in monthly fees. Additionally, since it owns AOL and Yahoo!, it can present its customers with some of its favorite apps at no additional cost. It also has great coverage in rural areas.
4) Connect by T-Mobile
The Connect by T-Mobile plan is currently a favorite of ours. It offers unlimited text and minutes at $45 per month, which comes out to only $35 if you pre-pay a year in advance. The plan also includes 10GB of data which should be enough for most people (unless you’re downloading movies on your phone every day). On top of all that, there’s a great deal when you combine Connect with Netflix to get both services for $10 less than they cost separately.
5) Visible Unlimited
T-Mobile has some of the best coverage and plans in America. So if youโre looking to spend less on your cell phone plan, but still want reliable coverage, you should consider T-Mobile as an option. T-Mobile offers its Unlimited Gigs plan for $70 a month, plus taxes and fees โ thatโs cheaper than Sprintโs Unlimited Freedom plan by $5 per month. However, with Sprintโs plan, you donโt have to worry about using more data than your allotment โ there are no overage charges if you go over your allotted amount. T-Mobile will limit your connection speed if you do use more data than what is allotted to you on their plan.

If youโre looking to save a few bucks on your cell phone bill, you should strongly consider picking up one of these plans. If saving money isnโt that important to you but having unlimited everything is, get T-Mobile! We would hate to tell Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure that his company is at the bottom of our list because we heard he loves getting last place.
