Canada Visa Requirements | What Are the Required Documents for a Canada Visa?

Published

on

Nationals of Canada must have a valid and approved Canadian visa before they are allowed to enter the country. The requirements for a Canadian visa depend on whether you are applying from within the country or from outside it.
If youโ€™re applying from inside Canada, you must meet the same requirements as any other Canadian citizen or permanent resident. If youโ€™re applying from outside Canada, however, and do not possess a valid passport or other travel document that proves your identity and nationality, then you will need to meet certain additional requirements. These requirements may vary depending on where in the world you are planning on migrating to. To learn more about what documents Canadians need to get a Canadian Visa, check out our article What Are the Requirements for a Canada Visa?

Canada Visa Requirements

Visas are available in Canada to individuals from different parts of the world. The general rule is that those who have come to Canada specifically to work can apply for a work visa. A visitor visa, on the other hand, is generally required for people who plan to stay in Canada for an extended period of time. These visas are called โ€œnon-immigrantโ€ visas because they do not grant permission to live in Canada permanently. Instead, they just allow certain types of visitors to stay here temporarily. To learn more about applying for a Canadian visa, you should first familiarize yourself with the requirements and check whether your countryโ€™s passport is valid enough to obtain a visa. Check out the tables below for more information on what documents you will need to apply for a Canadian visa:

What Are the Required Documents for a Canada Visa?

You are required to submit an application for a Canadian visa if your country is on the list of countries whose citizens are required to have a visa in order to enter Canada. The reason for your trip to Canada as well as the length of time you plan to spend there will determine which category of visa you need to apply for. For instance, if you wanted to go to Canada as a tourist, you would need a visa that is designated specifically for temporary visitors. You would require a Student Visa in order to enroll in an educational program.

Here are the documents required for a Canada visa:

  • Your passport.
  • Appropriate Canada visa application form.
  • Proof of paid Canada visa fees.
  • Proof of clean criminal record.
  • Proof of being in good health through a medical exam.
  • Photographs in accordance with the photo requirements for Canada visa.
  • Proof of financial means.
  • Proof you will return to your home country once the Canadian visa expires.
  • Identity and Civil Status Documents.
  • A cover letter that explains the purpose of your travel to Canada.
  • Letter of support/invitation to Canada.

Age

The applicant’s age, whether they are an adult (over the age of 18) or a minor (under the age of 18), may cause the requirements to vary (17 or under). Primary applicants for a position can only be accepted if they are adults. The dependent status of the minors is required to be attached.

There are different regulations to follow for a child who is traveling by themselves. (For a list of the requirements for minors’ visas, see below.)

Passport

You are required to have a passport that is valid in addition to any other travel documentation. When applying for a visa to enter Canada, you are required to provide photocopies of the information page on both sides of your passport.

It is required to contain:

  • The number of your passport.
  • The date it was issued and the date it will expire.
  • Your name, a photo of yourself, the date and location of your birth, and your birthplace are required.

Documents and forms

When you submit your request for a visa to enter Canada, you will be required to download an Application Package from the website of the IRCC. You will find there an instructional guide, a document checklist, and every form that you are required to fill out and turn in.

You are required to hand in every one of the forms and documents that are listed on the checklist. Copies of passports, photographs, receipts for paid fees, and other forms of identification are among these documents. However, this list is not exhaustive.

In addition to the Canada Visa Requirements, documents that are listed on the IRCC’s checklist, certain countries might have additional documentation requirements. In order to determine whether or not you need any additional documentation, you will need to inquire with the visa office that is responsible for your country.

Proof of paid Canada visa fees

In order to submit an application for a Canadian visa, you will be required to pay the applicable fees and include receipts of those payments with your submission. The prices of the various fees vary according to the reason for the trip.

There are two distinct categories of charges:

  • Costs associated with processing applications
  • Payment via biometric identifiers

Canadian visa photos

In order to comply with the regulations of Canada, you are required to present two photographs for use in your passport. Your application might get turned down if the photographs you submit do not satisfy the criteria established by the government of Canada.

When you go to get your picture taken, you should probably bring the photo requirements with you so that you can show them to the photographer.

Proof of financial means

You have to provide evidence that you can financially support yourself and any family members that may be coming with you for the duration of your stay.

You can do this through the following:

  • Bank statements.
  • Letter of employment showing annual earnings.
  • Evidence you have arranged to receive financial support from friends/family to cover the duration of your stay.
  • Evidence of income of your Canadian host or family member.

Keep in mind this is not an exhaustive list, and different countries may require other types of proof.

Evidence that you will return to your home country when your visa expires

You must persuade visa officers that you will return home after your visa expires. There are several approaches you could take, including:

  • Employment verification. You must provide copies of your employment contract as well as a letter of employment that identifies you as a permanent employee, specifies when you are expected to return to work, and describes your role at the company.
  • If you have property in your home country, you must provide proof of ownership, such as title deeds or lease agreements.
  • If you have familial ties in your home country or people to care for, such as elderly family members or children, you must obtain proof of your responsibilities.

Identity and Civil Status Documents

Photocopies of your identity and civil status documents must be submitted with your Canada visa application. Birth certificates, marriage certificates, and divorce/annulment certificates are examples of such documents.

You may be asked to provide National IDs or family or household registries in some cases. For more information, please contact the visa office in your country.

Clearances from the police

You must demonstrate that you have no prior criminal records and are not a danger to Canadian society.

This is possible if you obtain a police certificate or clearance in your home country.

In some cases, you may be required to provide police clearances from any countries where you have lived for more than six months.

Medical examination

To obtain a Canadian visa, you must be in good health. To demonstrate this, you may be required to undergo a medical examination and submit the results with your application.

A medical exam is usually not required if you plan to stay for less than six months, unless you will be working closely with people.

Your regular doctor, however, will be unable to perform the examination. A Panel Physician will be required. Panel Physicians for each country are listed on the IRCC website.

Letter of support/invitation

In some cases, you may be required to provide a letter of invitation from a Canadian. That person must be a Canadian citizen or have Permanent Residence in Canada. You are not legally responsible for the person who writes the letter. He or she must provide you with that letter, which you must include in your application.

The letter has to include thisย information about youย (the person applying for the visa):

  • Name.
  • Birth date.
  • Phone number and address.
  • The relationship you have with the person who is writing the letter.
  • How long you will stay in Canada, where you will stay, and when you plan to leave.
  • How you plan to support yourself financially.

The letter also has to include the followingย information about the writer:

  • Their complete name and date of birth.
  • Their Canadian address and phone number.
  • Their residence status (Citizen or Permanent Resident) and a photocopy of a document that proves it.
  • Their job title.
  • Their family details (names and dates of birth for his/her spouse and dependents).
  • How many people are in their household.

Conclusion

If you’re looking to travel to Canada, it’s important to know what the visa requirements are so that you can ensure you have all the necessary documents. The good news is that the process is relatively straightforward and as long as you have all the required documents, you should be able to get your visa without any problems. We hope this article has been helpful in outlining the Canada visa requirements and giving you a better understanding of what you need to do in order to obtain a visa.
