UK Civics Test Requirements

To apply for citizenship through the UK citizenship program, you must pass a civics test. The test consists of 20 questions that cover topics such as the main rights and freedoms in the UK and how the local government operates. You will have 45 minutes to complete it, with each question worth one mark. When you submit your application, you’ll be asked whether you’ve passed. If you fail the test, you’ll be sent a list of possible answers along with further information about each topic so that you can study at home or in preparation for retaking the test.

Book the test online at least three days in advance of the date you want to take it. In order to book, you will need to provide a valid email address, debit or credit card, and an acceptable form of ID:

  • passport; or
  • UK photocard driving license – full or provisional; or
  • Convention travel document (CTD), certificate of identity document (CID) or stateless person document (SPD); or
  • EU identity card; or
  • Immigration status document endorsed with a UK residence permit that has a photo; or
