If you are a minor and you have not gotten a job offer you can still obtain a blank employment certificate from the Issuing Officer of the local school district where you live.

A minor cannot apply for a Work Permit until they have received a job offer. This is because the application for a Work Permit requires details from the employer, including the proposed occupation, work description, hours of employment and wages.

When the permit is issues it will allow the minor to perform certain and specific duties for a particular employer.

Application process

If you have gotten a job offer you will need to fill the employment certificate. Meanwhile, after completely filling the form with all the required information, take the form to your employer to add his or her required information too.

The next step is to submit the form to the School Issuing Officer. With your proof of age that includes a birth certificate, passport, baptismal certificate, or school records. The school’s office will review the form and issue the work permit.

Once you have issue the employment certificate, the Issuing Officer will mail a copy to the employer for their record.

If you change your job, a new work permit must be acquired. This does not mean that the work permit expired but however, it is not transferable to another employer or another job with the same employer.

Start by downloading Form I-765 from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services website. Ensure that you accurately fill out all the information and be clear on your last entry into the United States.

Even if you are already in the country and you left the and came back within a short period, your return date would be your last entry.

Spend an adequate amount of time ensuring that you have your eligibility category properly and correctly filled.

If you are applying for your work permit in conjunction with your adjustment of status (visa), you will be interviewed at the U.S. embassy or consulate in the country of residence as a foreigner. You will need to pay an application and issuance fee, plus provide additional documentation, including your international passport.

Fee attachment

The fee amount is $410 as of 2019. But USCIS fee amounts go up frequently, so double-check the website for the latest. If you are requesting deferred action, you must also pay an $85 biometrics fee.
