Cardiorespiratory fitness includes aerobic endurance and respiratory endurance. Aerobic endurance is when your body can perform low- to moderate-intensity exercises for extended periods of time; as a result, your heart rate stays within certain limits. Respiratory endurance allows you to take in large amounts of oxygen during high-intensity exercise that lasts 30 seconds or less.
Muscular strength and endurance refer to your body’s ability to repeatedly lift moderate or heavyweights. To improve muscular strength, you should choose a weight that you can lift with good form, but at which you cannot complete more than 12 repetitions in a set. A muscle group or body part doesn’t usually have defined limits on how many times you can perform a set. For example, if your goal is to increase your bicep strength, you can perform sets of curls using 5-pound (2.27 kg), 10-pound (4.54 kg), and 15-pound (6.80 kg) dumbbells for one to three sets per day, allowing yourself one day off between workouts for each muscle group.

There are four types of physical fitness:
- General- General physical fitness includes flexibility, body composition, and body awareness.
- Cardiorespiratory- Cardiorespiratory fitness encompasses heart health as well as aerobic capacity.
- Muscular strength- Muscular strength involves having muscles that can exert a lot of force in a short period.
- Muscular endurance- Muscular endurance involves having muscles that can exert force for a long period without tiring out.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says individuals need to do at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity throughout most weeks of their year to keep from becoming sedentary. Cardiorespiratory fitness encompasses heart health as well as aerobic capacity. It isn’t just about how to fit you are, but how well your heart and lungs are working together to help blood circulate throughout your body.
Aerobic capacity is a measure of how much oxygen you’re able to use for intense physical activity—basically, how much work your muscles can do without becoming exhausted. One way to test aerobic capacity is by seeing if you can keep moving while still having enough breath to speak in complete sentences at a certain speed or intensity.
