What Is iTunes: Credit cards offer you a line of credit that can be used to make purchases, balance transfers. And/or cash advances and require that you pay back the loan amount in the future. When using a credit card, you will need to make at least the minimum payment every month by the due date on the balance.
ATM cards are not credit cards or debit cards. ATM cards are payment card size and style plastic cards with a magnetic stripe. And/or a plastic smart card with a chip that contains a unique card number and some security information such as an expiration date or CVVC (CVV).

Originally announced by CEO Steve Jobs on January 9, 2001, iTunes’ original and main focus was music, with a library offering organization, collection, and storage of users’ music collections. Starting in 2005, Apple expanded on the core music features with support for digital video, podcasts, e-books, and mobile apps purchased from the iOS App Store.
Until the release of iOS 5 in 2011, all iPhones, iPod Touches and iPads required iTunes for activation and updating mobile apps. Newer iOS devices have less reliance on iTunes in order to function, though it can still be used to back up the contents of mobile devices, as well as to share files with personal computers.
Though well received in its early years, iTunes soon received increasingly significant criticism for a bloated user experience, with Apple adopting an all-encompassing feature-set in iTunes rather than sticking to its original music-based purpose. On June 3, 2019, Apple announced that iTunes in macOS Catalina would be replaced by separate apps, namely Music, Podcasts, and TV. Finder would take over the device management capabilities. This change would not affect Windows or older macOS versions.
History
SoundJam MP, released by Casady & Greene in 1998, was renamed “iTunes” when Apple purchased it in 2000. The primary developers of the software moved to Apple as part of the acquisition, and simplified SoundJam’s user interface, added the ability to burn CDs, and removed its recording feature and skin support.
The first version of iTunes, promotionally dubbed “World’s Best and Easiest To Use Jukebox Software,” was announced on January 9, 2001. Subsequent releases of iTunes often coincided with new hardware devices, and gradually included support for new features, including “smart playlists”, the iTunes Store, and new audio formats.
Platform availability
Apple released iTunes for Windows in 2003.
On April 26, 2018, iTunes was released on Microsoft Store for Windows 10, primarily to allow it to be installed on Windows 10 devices configured to only allow installation of software from Microsoft Store.
Unlike Windows versions for other platforms, it is more self-contained due to technical requirements for distribution on the store (not installing background helper services such as Bonjour), and is updated automatically though the store rather than using Apple Software Update.
How To Remove Credit Card From iTunes
Apple requires you to supply the credentials for a valid form of payment, usually a credit card, when you register for an iTunes account. The information is kept on file, so it’s always at hand for quick purchases.
But, if you don’t want to store credit card information in iTunes because you’re worried about privacy, or you don’t want your child making unauthorized purchases while using your computer, you can remove it. Here’s how.
Delete Your Credit Card From the iTunes Store

This involves just a few steps:
- Open iTunes.
- If you’re not already signed in, go to the Store menu, choose Sign In, then log in to your account.
- Once signed in, go to the Store menu, then choose View my Apple ID. You may be prompted to enter your password.
- In the Apple ID Summary, click the Edit link (it’s located to the right of Payment Type).
- In the Edit Payment Information screen, instead of choosing a credit card, click None.
- Scroll down and choose Done.
- Your Apple iTunes account now has no credit card attached.
How to Get Apps on an Account Without a Credit Card
After the credit card is removed from your iTunes account, you can still get apps, music, movies, and books on your iPad. There are a number of options, including one that allows kids to download what they want without having to do anything special.
- Give apps as gifts: Instead of buying apps on the iPad, use a different account that has a credit card attached to buy the apps. Or, give music and movies as gifts through the iTunes store.
- Set up an iTunes allowance: This option is great if you want a low-maintenance solution. Use the allowance to closely monitor what your kid is doing on the iPad. Setting up an allowance can be great for older kids, as well.
- Add and remove: This one takes the most maintenance, but it is a viable solution. Add the credit card to the account when you want to purchase something, then remove it after the purchase is confirmed. This works best if you schedule once-a-week or once-a-month purchases for the iPad.
- Load it up first: This is the easiest way if you have younger children who don’t need the latest and greatest apps on their iPads. After you register for an account, download all the apps, books, music, and movies you want on it before removing the credit card.
How do I remove my credit card details from iTunes?
When you sign up with iTunes Store (or the App Store), you have to give Apple your bank card or credit card details. Many users ask us how to get rid of these card details so that Apple cannot access them any more.
Maybe you want to replace your credit card with a different one, or you just want to make sure you don’t end up spending money with Apple. (Or that nobody you pass the iPhone to, such as children or grandchildren, can spend money.)
Either way, it’s reasonably easy to remove your card details from iTunes. Your card details are linked to your Apple ID, and you can change or remove your Apple ID payment information directly on your iPhone or iPad, or by using iTunes on your Mac.
How to remove card details from iTunes: Mac
If you’re using an Apple Mac computer, you remove your card details from iTunes using the iTunes app:
- Open iTunes.
- Sign in with your Apple ID (if you aren’t signed in already, then choose Account > Sign In).
- Choose Account > View My Account.
- Enter your Apple ID and Password and press Return.
- Click Edit to the right of Payment Type.
- Select None next to Payment Method.
- Click Done.
You will no longer be able to make purchases from iTunes, download Mac or iOS paid-for apps, and won’t be able to make in-app purchases.
