The Top 5 Provinces to Find Work in Canada as a Truck Driver in 2022- Apply Now!

What’s the best province to work in as a truck driver in Canada? For many, this answer depends on where you live, what kinds of long-haul routes you like to drive, and whether or not you want to operate your own truck or find work as an employee-for-hire with one of Canada’s major trucking companies.

Provinces to Find Work in Canada

When it comes to finding work in Canada as a truck driver, not all provinces are created equal. While some provinces boast higher salaries than others, they also offer more obstacles to overcome, such as high costs of living and harsh weather conditions that may make your job more difficult or even impossible during certain times of the year. If you want to find your ideal place to work in Canada as a truck driver, consider these five provinces that were ranked highest based on factors such as income and employment opportunities.

What is Work in Canada?

Work in Canada is defined by its many skilled trades, along with a booming oil and gas industry that fuels Canada’s economy. In fact, according to data from The Globe and Mail, between October 2020 and October 2022, 87% of Canadians were employed in full-time jobs, which were considered good jobs or better.

Therefore, if you have good work experience in Canada (and good work history), it should be relatively easy for you to find employment – especially considering thousands of truck drivers are retiring every year. Though there will likely always be an overall demand for drivers in Canada, some provinces are better than others when it comes to finding employment; keep reading to learn more about which provinces offer the best odds when it comes to finding work.

What is Truck Driver?

Truck driving is one of Canada’s most in-demand jobs. When you become a professional truck driver, you can earn up to $80,000 annually and $2,000 – $3,000 per week. As an independent contractor, your salary is directly related to how much work you are able to secure and complete each year. The more seniority you gain within your company and industry, your earnings will also increase.

To become one, you’ll need to undergo extensive training. The hours of instruction can vary depending on what school you choose, but it’s common for classes to take between 4-6 weeks full-time or up to 12 months part-time. You’ll spend most of your time behind the wheel practicing defensive driving and basic maneuvering skills so that you have them down pat before heading out on an open road. It takes dedication and hard work, but with good reason: truck drivers are some of Canada’s highest-paid workers!

What are Provinces?

A province is one of several primary political divisions in Canada and a subnational entity within some sovereign states. There are ten provinces and three territories that makeup Canada. Provinces are usually components of federations, they can also be sovereign states like The United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, and many more.

The definition of a province is a specific area or location within a country or state that is often a subset of a larger union. Ontario is an example of a province in Canada. A division of the world, smaller than a region, with reference to the plants or animals found there. It is a part of a country having a government of its own (as one of the divisions of Canada). It is also the part or parts of a country far from the capital or chief city.

The Top 5 Provinces to Find Work in Canada as a Truck Driver in 2022

Traveling the great and beautiful country of Canada as a truck driver offers many wonderful opportunities to experience the sights and sounds the world has to offer. Whether you’re traveling across the country or just looking to find work in one of Canada’s most vibrant cities, truck driving jobs are available almost everywhere!

Check out this list of top 5 provinces to find work in Canada as a truck driver in 2022 below!

1) Ontario

Ontario is by far the most populous province of Canada, with over 13 million people calling it home. The Ontario government offers newcomers many different tax credits and subsidies that can make living and working in Ontario much easier for both individuals and families. In addition, jobs are plentiful throughout Ontario; approximately 90% of Canadians live within 160km of at least one major city in Ontario.

Despite Toronto’s reputation for being among North America’s most expensive cities, big-city opportunities often come with big-city salaries. New immigrants will be pleased to know that learning English is relatively easy; large immigrant communities already exist throughout Ontario, and learning English there may lead to better job opportunities down the road.

The vast amount of trucking jobs available in the province of Ontario include:

  • solid waste truck driver
  • yard truck driver
  • box truck driver

2) Saskatchewan

Not only does Saskatchewan rank highly for truck driving jobs, but they also pay their truck drivers well and aren’t hard on your pocketbook. Between truck driving jobs in Regina and Saskatoon (that’s right—two opportunities!) The following top provinces can offer you great salaries, an excellent chance of employment, and reasonable cost of living expenses.

Remember, every province is different when it comes to job options, earnings potential, and cost of living expenses. Take these numbers with a grain of salt! Instead, do some research based on your own situation; maybe a move is inevitable? There is a high demand for truck drivers in Saskatchewan, especially long-haul truck drivers. To meet this great need, an immigration program known as the Long-Haul Truck Driver Project was started. This is part of Saskatchewan’s Provincial Nominee Experience category. The aim of the project is to get trucking firms to recruit long-haul truck drivers to work in Canada on a Temporary Foreign Permit.

3) Alberta

Alberta is probably known by many for its oil and gas industry, but did you know that it is also home to one of Canada’s largest diversified economies? The major trucking companies located there are J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. and Schneider National Incorporated. This means that many drivers can find jobs here; however, it also means competition will be fierce. The average annual wage for drivers in Alberta is $70,000 – $90,000 CAD depending on your experience level.

Alberta also has a high demand for truck drivers. Positions available here include:

  • long-haul truck drivers
  • pilot truck drivers
  • heavy truck drivers
  • gravel truck drivers among many more.

4) British Columbia

Although it’s not as popular with truck drivers, British Columbia is still an option for those looking for work and living closer to home. As of early 2022, there were thousands of open driving jobs throughout B.C., but especially on Vancouver Island and near Surrey. Many jobs are also available in northern B.C., including Fort St John and Terrace.

Although not currently one of the top areas for openings, it won’t be long before Northern B.C. catches up; many new projects have already been announced (e.g., Woodfibre LNG). In addition, there are more potential drivers located nearby; between Alberta, and Saskatchewan alone are nearly 1 million people who fit into truck driver demographics!

There are various different types of truck driver jobs available in British Columbia. These include:

  • long-haul truck drivers
  • logging truck drivers

5) Nova Scotia

Currently, Nova Scotia has 2,450 trucking jobs available that pay at least $27.34 an hour on average. As with other provinces, almost 70% of these jobs are offered by transportation and warehousing companies while grocery stores and restaurants comprise another 10%. The best-paying sector is farming where truck drivers can make up to $39.00 an hour or $85,000 a year if they work full-time throughout all 12 months of the year. From April 1st through September 30th, daytime shift times are between 4 AM and 1 PM with night shifts from 11 PM until 7 AM from October 1st through March 31st.

Trucking jobs available here include:

  • delivery truck drivers
  • long-haul truck drivers
  • ready-mix (cement mixer) truck drivers
  • heavy truck drivers and dumpster truck drivers among others.

In Conclusion

Finding work in any industry is difficult. Even when an industry is thriving, finding work can be tough. For example, getting hired as a truck driver doesn’t require some insider knowledge or expensive education: you just need to learn how to drive and pass an exam.

However, because there are more people seeking jobs than there are jobs available, competition for those truck driving positions will continue to rise over time. If you want to find work as a truck driver in Canada by 2022 then keep these five provinces on your radar!
