Screencastify is a web-based screen recorder that will turn your Chrome browser into a screen and video recorder. There’s no need to download any software as Screencastify works right in your web browser. Screencastify doesn’t have any of its own tutorials, but they do work with other instructional sites like Udemy and Skillshare. You can also search through a large list of topics on Google that you can use with Screencastify; it’s particularly helpful if you’re interested in recording certain game applications or using specific programs. It makes sense if you don’t want to make videos on how to use your phone—it would take forever!

If you like to use video games and apps as your content, Screencast-O-Matic is a good option. It’s also free, easy to use, and offers high-quality videos. However, users say it has a few bugs that can get in your way if you’re not careful. Its biggest downside is that it doesn’t have a specific tutorial page so there may be moments where you have no idea how to set up or record content. Some users recommend turning off any pop-up blockers when using Screencast-O-Matic as they said these features would interfere with their work process.

Open Broadcaster Software

OBS has long been a top choice of streamers and YouTubers because it’s highly customizable and packed with features. It’s available on all major platforms, including Windows, macOS, Linux, and even as an Android app. What really sets OBS apart is its large community of gamers who continue to create new open-source plug-ins that make it one of the most powerful free screen recorders out there. Meanwhile, if you want to get into streaming, OBS is a solid option that can help you make your mark on Twitch or YouTube Gaming quickly. If you’re interested in learning more about Twitch streaming or starting your own channel, (check out our handy guide).

If you don’t like OBS but are still looking for a quality free screen recorder. There are a few alternatives worth considering. XSplit Gamecaster is one option that offers everything you need to capture your gameplay and stream it live to Twitch or YouTube. Unlike OBS, which was designed by gamers with gamers in mind, XSplit has a pro-first focus. It includes powerful video editing tools that make it easy to cut out unnecessary footage and make professional-looking edits on your desktop before you even hit record.

Jing Project (Formerly Windows Movie Maker)

Jing is an open-source screen recorder that can be used to record anything on your screen. In addition to basic screen recording, Jing lets you draw on your recordings and insert text. If you want more advanced features, it can also record audio using a microphone and video using a webcam. You can also convert videos into GIFs with custom overlays, speed them up or slow them down, add subtitles and edit existing subtitles. It even records from multiple monitors at once! The best part about Jing is that it’s completely free software—you don’t have to pay for any of its features!

Jing was a screencasting computer program launched in 2007 as Jing Project by the TechSmith Corporation. The software took a picture or video of the user’s computer screen and uploaded it to the Web, FTP, computer, or clipboard. I uploaded it to the web, the program automatically created a URL to the content so it could be shared with others. On 6 January 2009, TechSmith released Jing Pro, a paid premium version of Jing. In February 2012, Techsmith announce Jing Pro is to be retire. All users (regardless of subscription) could use this service until 28 February 2013. On 14 July 2020, Techsmith shut down the support for uploading to Screencast.com in line with the previously-announced end of support for Jing. TechSmith also changed the Jing product page to point to a new product named TechSmith Capture that performs a similar function.

Free screen recorder

However, if you want to record your screen and audio simultaneously, there’s a hidden feature in OBS that you can use to achieve it. The trick is to change your audio settings so that only what you hear is being sent to your mic. That way, when you press start recording, you’ll have an un-muted mic and any sounds on your PC will be recorded in addition to what appears on your screen.

Once again though, I don’t recommend doing so as it may cause issues with other programs (including Google Chrome). Additionally, some people have reported that they get better results with FRAPS. (Of course, there are plenty of other options too.)

Camtasia

Camtasia is a Mac-only screen recording software designed specifically with marketers in mind. If you’re looking to upload your screencasts directly to YouTube, Camtasia will do it quickly and efficiently. The only catch? It’s expensive as far as screen recording software goes—but if you’re going to use it to make money by selling training videos on your site, it could be well worth it.

In Camtasia Recorder, users can start and stop recording with shortcuts at any time. At which point the recording is halted and Camtasia Recorder can render the input that has been capture into the TREC format. The TREC file can be saved to disk or directly import into the Camtasia component for editing. Camtasia Recorder allows audio (and webcam) recording while screen recording is in progress, so the presenter can capture live narration during a tutorial or presentation. Camtasia also supports dubbing in other audio tracks or voiceover during post-capture editing. Windows users may also install an add-in for Microsoft PowerPoint that will allow them to initiate recording of a presentation from within PowerPoint itself.

OBS Studio / Streamlabs OBS

To get begin with screen recording, you have a few options. The first is OBS Studio. It’s a very robust and full-featured screen recording software program, but it’s not exactly beginner-friendly. If you’re looking to dive in and start using it right away though. Streamlabs OBS has made things much easier by creating a version of OBS that can stream directly to Twitch. It doesn’t have quite as many features or quality settings as standard OBS does. But it’s extremely easy to use and set up if you’re looking for something quick that just works.

If you want more control over your screen recording software. Vysor is an app that allows you to mirror your device’s screen right onto your computer. If you have a Pixel 2 or newer, you can use a feature in Google Assistant called Screen Recording that records directly to your Gallery. It’s not as robust as an actual screen recording software. But it doesn’t require any apps and only works on certain devices. It can also work well in a pinch if you’re looking to record something quickly without much setup time. For Mac users, QuickTime Player has a built-in video recorder that is easy to use and doesn’t take up too much space on your computer.

Bandicam

Bandicam is a popular screen recorder that can record high-quality videos at resolutions of up to 1080p. It also supports overlay text and graphics, as well as webcam recording. But one of its best features is how well it captures long gameplay sessions; Bandicam has an option to save files in small, continuous clips of up to 60 minutes in length. The program’s simple interface makes it easy to use, even for novice users, and sharing video files is easy with Bandicam’s built-in video editor. However, Bandicam doesn’t offer any way to upload or host your own recordings.

It displays an FPS count in the corner of the screen while the DirectX/OpenGL window is in active mode. When the FPS count is shown in green, it means the program is ready to record, and when it starts recording, it changes the color of the FPS count to red. The FPS count is not displayed when the program is recording in the Screen Recording mode. This software has a maximum frame rate of 144 FPS. Bandicam is shareware, meaning that it can be tested free of charge with limited functionality. The free version of Bandicam places its name as a watermark at the top of every recorded video, and each recorded video is limited to 10 minutes in length. However, users can adjust the screen margin with the video screen so that the watermark is off-screen from the video.

Movavi Screen Capture Studio HD

No wonder Movavi’s Screen Capture Studio HD is one of the top ten best screen recorders for Youtube. This software captures everything you do on your PC, including audio from all connected devices. You can edit and create high-quality videos with various effects and filters, add narration to explain important details, trim unwanted sections and convert recordings into WMV or MP4 format. A built-in player enables you to watch videos in a separate window while capturing new ones. The Screen Capture Studio also offers some handy editing tools that allow you to crop a video frame (or insert a custom logo), add text, apply effects and watermarks, etc.

ScreenFlick / WinX Screen Recorder

The ScreenFlick utility is probably one of our favorite desktop screen recorders. You can use it to record your screen in 1080p, 720p, or even 480p; and you can choose from three different quality settings (high, medium, and low). What we like about ScreenFlick is that it integrates with Windows 7’s AeroSnap feature to keep your video centered and only take up as much space as necessary.

If you’d like a more advanced set of features, check out WinX Screen Recorder. WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe is a piece of all-in-one video processing software combined with a screen recorder, webcam recorder, video converter, DVD ripper, video downloader, and other tools. Below we will focus on the features of its screen recorder.

Lightworks

Lightworks is a non-linear editing system (NLE) for editing and mastering digital video. It was an early developer of computer-based non-linear editing systems, and has been in development since 1989 and won a 2017 EMMY Award for pioneering digital nonlinear editing. Lightworks has millions of adopters worldwide due to the software being available across three platforms Windows, Mac, and Linux. The development of an open-source version was announce on April 11, 2010. No source code of the program has yet been released. In July 2020, a Lightworks product manager confirmed that they “Still hope to announce something in the future” about it becoming open source.

This free open-source program has been around since 1997, and although it’s not as well known as some of its newer counterparts, it packs a punch. In addition to being able to record your screen, you can use Lightworks to stream live content and capture video clips. It also supports a variety of other editing programs, including Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro X. You can even use it to import files from cameras like GoPros and DJI Phantoms.
