Graduating from a Pharmacy school is not a guarantee that you are no longer a student. Pharmacy internship in Nigeria is a one year compulsory program for a fresh pharmacy graduate to go into training under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
To qualify as a Pharmacy intern, You will have to obtain a Pharmacy degree in any accredited pharmacy school within and outside the country. In Nigeria, After B.Pharm or Pharm D. education, you will be awarded a Provisional Pharmacy license (Form G) by the Pharmacy council of Nigeria.
Therefore, the induction ceremony/Oath taking is a birth of an amateur pharmacist who must pass through a compulsory one year training before being a full licensed pharmacist.
Internship in Nigeria can be done in any accredited pharmacy internship centers in Nigeria. The centers can be;
Hospital pharmacy (State or federal)
Administrative and Consulting Pharmacy( such as PCN, NAFDAC, NDLEA, NPHCDA)
Pharmaceutical Research centers such as (National Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD).
Which type of internship center is best for training?
The answer to this question is no center. All training centers are very good and are monitored by the Pharmacy board to ascertain the level of training interns get – that is the reason for accreditation.
Most times, young pharmacists are hazy when choosing an internship center. Some are challenged with the monetary benefits to gain from choosing a center. But, from a personal experience, It is better to define the types of Career to pursue in Pharmacy Profession immediately you graduate. You can choose to follow that part through your training.
Secondly, You need to be versatile. That you are working in a pharmaceutical industry will not stop patients or relations from asking you, “what dose of Paracetamol can i take?” or still, “what is the difference between a Gel and an ointment?”
Therefore, when choosing a center, try to choose a different area from what you have done before during your Industrial Training or Clerkship. In other words, try an entirely different field of pharmacy practice.
