OCSBconnect is a service that allows Grade 7 to 12 students. To submit anonymous tips on incidents of bullying, student safety. And crime to school staff by phone, text, or mobile app. This service, was request by our students. Strives to make our schools safer and more welcoming by providing students with a tool. That allows them to report bullying incidents without putting their own safety at risk.
The OCDSB has Wi-Fi technology in all of our schools and administrative buildings. All equipment purchased by the OCDSB meets current Institute of Electric and Electronic Engineers and Department of Communications specifications and, Health Canada’s Safety Code 6 standards.
The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board will continue to monitor its approach for the use of learning and business technologies given the guidance and direction provided by the relevant federal and provincial agencies.

The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB, known as English-language Public District School Board No. 25 prior to 1999 refers to both the institution responsible for the operation of all English public schools in the city of Ottawa, Ontario, and its governing body. Like most school boards, the OCDSB is administer by a group of elect trustees and one director select and appoint by the Board itself. Additionally, annually, two student trustees are select per provincial regulation.
Every four years, within the context of the Ottawa municipal elections, an election is held within each of Ottawa’s twelve trustee electoral zones to elect each trustee. Following the election and annually thereafter, the Board of Trustees holds its organizational meeting, where the Board membership elects two of its members to the positions of chair and vice-chair of the Board.
Chairs and membership of each of the Board’s committees are also determine as part of the organizational meeting. In addition to the twelve trustees, two student trustees are elect by their peers, providing opportunities for the student body to become inform and involve in Board governance.
The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board was create on 1 January 1998 in accordance with Ontario provincial government legislation including merging of the former adjacent Carleton Board of Education and the Ottawa Board of Education. The headquarters of the amalgamate school district is locate at the former headquarters of the Carleton Board of Education at 133 Greenbank Road, Nepean.
Historically, and to this day, the OCDSB is one of the very few school boards in Ontario with an advisory council on the arts providing input and annual reports to the board of trustees. In 2009-2010 the OCDSB tried to shut down the Alternative program, a group of students and parents from Lady Evelyn Alt teamed up with a trustee and won the Review.
In 2017 a family was award approximately $3,000 after winning a lawsuit against the OCDSB over the board’s failure to take a student’s complaints about bullying seriously. As of 2018 two former students filed lawsuits against the OCDSB for failing its “legal duty to provide for the safety of its students”.
In 2019 an investigation was launch to look into what ultimately result in three sex offense charges against OCDSB teacher Majed Turk in July 2020. The alleged incidents occurre between September and November 2019. As of 2020, there were ongoing lawsuits filed against the OCDSB for the sexual abuse of its students by the now-deceased teacher and Bell High School basketball coach, Donald Greenham.
What Is a Guest Network?
A guest WiFi network provides an access point to the internet separate from the one your primary devices connect to. WiFi works by connecting devices to a single router that grants internet access.
By creating a separate entry to the internet with guest WiFi, you’re allowing internet access for devices that may be more susceptible to viruses without allowing them to connect to your home network.
Is Guest WiFi Safe?
Guest WiFi is the safest way to give your visitors access to the internet through your existing network. If your guests log on to the primary network with a compromised or malware-infected device, the virus can spread to your home devices connected to WiFi.
However, if the compromised device is connected to guest WiFi, the virus or malware can’t penetrate your home network. Additionally, guest WiFi provides another layer of protection for IoT appliances including smart TVs, which are more susceptible to security vulnerabilities.
Should Guest WiFi Have a Password?
All WiFi networks should have a password to prohibit unknown devices from connecting. While your primary network should have a more complicated password, it’s acceptable for guest WiFi to have a simplified password that’s easy to share and change if needed.
How To See What Devices Are Connected To My WiFi
You can see what devices have found your WiFi and connected by using your router’s web interface. If you suspect unknown devices have accessed your network, you can remove them through the interface.
If you don’t recognize the devices listed on your router’s web interface, change the WiFi password. This will require all connections to re-enter the new password before they are allowed network access again.
How To Set up Guest WiFi
Often, creating a guest WiFi network is as simple as changing your preferences. Most routers allow you to add additional networks simply by logging into the administrator settings.
Manually Access Router Settings
Modern routers have options to customize guest WiFi access, like setting how many guests can access the network, times they can be connected, and network broadcasting for automatic connection. Follow the steps below to update your router settings to add a guest network.
- Step 1: Find the router in your browser. Find your router’s IP address in the user manual or on the back of the router and enter it into your browser’s search bar.
- Step 2: Log into your router. Log in to the router with administrator access.
- Step 3: Change the existing network settings. Find your wireless settings or router settings and choose the option to allow a guest network or access.
- Step 4: Set the network name. Once guest WiFi is enable, set the name of the network in the SSID field. By default, most routers will add “-guest” at the end of the existing network name.
- Step 5: Configure the guest network settings. Add a new password and network security method (WPA or WPA2). Ensure you disallow guests from being able to access the primary network and settings.
What Is Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is a family of wireless network protocols, based on the IEEE 802.11 family of standards. Which are commonly used for local area networking of devices and Internet access. Allowing nearby digital devices to exchange data by radio waves.
These are the most widely used computer networks in the world. Used globally in home and small office networks to link desktops. And laptop computers, tablet computers, smartphones, smart TVs, printers. And smart speakers together and to a wireless router to connect them to the Internet. In wireless access points in public places like coffee shops, hotels, libraries. And airports to provide the public Internet access for mobile devices.
Wi‑Fi is a trademark of the non-profit Wi-Fi Alliance. Which restricts the use of the term Wi-Fi Certified to products that successfully complete interoperability certification testing. As of 2017, the Wi-Fi Alliance consisted of more than 800 companies from around the world. As of 2019, over 3.05 billion Wi-Fi-enable devices are shipp(ed) globally each year.
Wi-Fi uses multiple parts
Wi-Fi uses multiple parts of the IEEE 802 protocol family and is designed to interwork seamlessly with its wired sibling, Ethernet. Compatible devices can network through wireless access points to each other as well as to wired devices and the Internet. The different versions of Wi-Fi are specified by various IEEE 802.11 protocol standards. With the different radio technologies determining radio bands, and the maximum ranges, and speeds that may be achieved.
Wi-Fi most commonly uses the 2.4 gigahertz (120 mm) UHF and 5 gigahertz (60 mm) SHF radio bands; these bands are subdivide into multiple channels. Channels can be shared between networks but only one transmitter can locally transmit on a channel at any moment in time.
Wi-Fi’s wavebands have relatively high absorption and work best for line-of-sight use. Many common obstructions such as walls, pillars, home appliances, etc. May greatly reduce range, but this also helps minimize interference between different networks in crowded environments. An access point (or hotspot) often has a range of about 20 meters (66 feet) indoors while some modern access points claim up to a 150-meter (490-foot) range outdoors.
Hotspot coverage can be as small as a single room with walls that block radio waves, or as large as many square kilometers (miles) using many overlapping access points with roaming permitted between them. Over time the speed and spectral efficiency of Wi-Fi have increased. As of 2019, some versions of Wi-Fi, running on suitable hardware at close range, can achieve speeds of 9.6 Gbit/s (gigabit per second).
