Before you start, read these guidelines carefully:

Guidelines for Graphic Design Scholarship Contest Participants

You may enter the Contest from the date of announcement (December 1, 2023) to the end date (January 10th, 2024) till mid-night US EST.
You must be 18+ years of age, a national of Malaysia, and living in Malaysia to participate in the Contest.
The scholarship award is MYR 2100 which will be granted to the winner of the Scholarship Contest (hereon Contest).
You must be enrolled in a college or university that is based in Malaysia with a GPA not less than 2.5.
You must read the Terms and Conditions before participation.

I) Creative Brief

To participate, you need to follow the theme of Bersekutu Bertambah Mutu (Unity is Strength), the national motto of Malaysia.

Create a logo, symbol or emblem that represents your perception of Bersekutu Bertambah Mutu (Unity is Strength). You may add any or all of these words “Bersekutu Bertambah Mutu”, “Unity is Strength”, “Unity”, or none
The created graphic cannot be similar or duplicate the national coat of arms of Malaysia. You may include some elements from it or create new but do not replicate it.
Your design should be original, and should not be derived or copied from online or offline resources in Malaysia or elsewhere.
You may enter only one (1) concept on Bersekutu Bertambah Mutu; any other graphic design concept will be rejected.

II) Scoring

The Contest is a great opportunity for students to learn firsthand experience of how the graphic design industry works. Your score will be based on:

Ability to follow guidelines
Adherence to the creative brief
Research skills
Usage of learned graphic design skills
Creative input and perception
Ability to express yourself through visual design

Malaysia

Malaysia is a country in Southeast Asia. The federal constitutional monarchy consists of thirteen states and three federal territories, separated by the South China Sea into two regions, Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo’s East Malaysia. Peninsular Malaysia shares a land and maritime border with Thailand and maritime borders with Singapore, Vietnam, and Indonesia. East Malaysia shares land and maritime borders with Brunei and Indonesia and a maritime border with the Philippines and Vietnam.

Kuala Lumpur is the national capital, largest city and the seat of the legislative branch of the federal government. The nearby planned capital of Putrajaya is the administrative capital; which represents the seat of both the executive branch (Cabinet, federal ministries and agencies) and the judicial branch of the federal government. With a population of over 32 million, Malaysia is the world’s 43rd-most populous country. The southernmost point of continental Eurasia is in Tanjung Piai. In the tropics, Malaysia is one of 17 megadiverse countries, home to a number of endemic species.

Malaysia has its origins in the Malay kingdoms which, from the 18th century, became subject to the British Empire, along with the British Straits Settlements protectorate. Peninsular Malaysia was unified as the Malayan Union in 1946. Malaya was restructured as the Federation of Malaya in 1948 and achieved independence on 31 August 1957. The independent Malaya united with the then British crown colonies of North Borneo, Sarawak, and Singapore on 16 September 1963 to become Malaysia. In August 1965, Singapore was expelled from the federation and became a separate independent country.

History

Evidence of modern human habitation in Malaysia dates back 40,000 years. In the Malay Peninsula, the first inhabitants are thought to be Negritos. Traders and settlers from India and China arrived as early as the first century AD, establishing trading ports and coastal towns in the second and third centuries. Their presence resulted in strong Indian and Chinese influences on the local cultures, and the people of the Malay Peninsula adopted the religions of Hinduism and Buddhism. Sanskrit inscriptions appear as early as the fourth or fifth century.

The Kingdom of Langkasuka arose around the second century in the northern area of the Malay Peninsula, lasting until about the 15th century. Between the 7th and 13th centuries, much of the southern Malay Peninsula was part of the maritime Srivijayan empire. By the 13th and the 14th century, the Majapahit empire had successfully wrested control over most of the peninsula and the Malay Archipelago from Srivijaya. Islam began to spread among Malays in the 14th century. In the early 15th century, Parameswara, a runaway king of the former Kingdom of Singapura linked to the old Srivijayan court, founded the Malacca Sultanate. Malacca was an important commercial centre during this time, attracting trade from around the region.

What is A Logo?

A logo from Ancient Greek λόγος (lógos) ‘word, speech’, and τύπος (túpos) ‘mark, imprint’) is a graphic mark, emblem, or symbol used to aid and promote public identification and recognition. It may be of an abstract or figurative design or include the text of the name it represents as in a wordmark.

In the days of hot metal typesetting, a logotype was one word cast as a single piece of type (e.g. “The” in ATF Garamond), as opposed to a ligature, which is two or more letters joined, but not forming a word. By extension, the term was also used for a uniquely set and arranged typeface or colophon. At the level of mass communication and in common usage. A company’s logo is today often synonymous with its trademark or brand.

History

Numerous inventions and techniques have contributed to the contemporary logo, including cylinder seals (c. 2300 BCE), coins (c. 600 BCE), trans-cultural diffusion of logographic languages, coats of arms, watermarks, silver hallmarks, and the development of printing technology.

As the industrial revolution converted western societies from agrarian to industrial in the 18th and 19th centuries, photography and lithography contributed to the boom of an advertising industry that integrated typography and imagery together on the page. Simultaneously, typography itself was undergoing a revolution of form and expression that expanded beyond the modest, serif typefaces used in books, to bold, ornamental typefaces used on broadsheet posters.

The arts were expanding in purpose—from expression and decoration of an artistic, storytelling nature, to a differentiation of brands and products that the growing middle classes were consuming. Consultancies and trades-groups in the commercial arts were growing and organizing; by 1890, the US had 700 lithographic printing firms employing more than 8,000 people.
