Employment Rate

MAESD collects employment data for graduates of undergraduate programs through the annual Ontario University Graduate Survey. The data from this survey are used to estimate employment rates at 6 months and 2 years after graduation. The employment rate is defined as the number of employed persons expressed as a percentage of the labour force where the labour force is those persons who were employed, or unemployed but looking for work and not enrolled full-time in school.

For the 2016 indicators, MAESD surveyed the 2013 graduating cohort. Of the 10,443 graduates from University of Toronto undergraduate programs, 4,127 or 39.52% responded to the survey. The University of Toronto Careers Centre provides career and employment services exclusively to U of T students, recent graduates, and employers.

Lester B Pearson

Lester Bowles Pearson PC OM CC OBE was a Canadian scholar, statesman, soldier, and diplomat who served as the 14th prime minister of Canada from 1963 to 1968, as the head of two back-to-back Liberal minority governments after his party won the elections of 1963 and 1965. With his government programs and policies, together with his groundbreaking work at the United Nations and in international diplomacy, which included his role in ending the Suez Crisis, Pearson is generally considered among the most influential Canadians of the 20th century and is ranked among the greatest Canadian.

Pearson succeeded Saint Laurent as leader of the Liberal Party in 1958 and became prime minister in 1963. His government introduced a national pension plan and a family assistance program, broadened old-age security benefits, and laid the groundwork for the National Free Medical Service.

Patricia Pearson:

She is the second child of Lester B Pearson and also the only daughter. She is a critically acclaim journalist and the author of several books of both fiction and nonfiction. Patricia has won three National Magazine Awards and the Arthur Ellis Award for best non-fiction crime book. She lives outside Toronto.

Patricia Pearson is one of five children of Canadian diplomat Geoffrey Pearson and former Ontario Senator Landon Pearson. And the granddaughter of former Prime Minister Lester Pearson. She was educated at Netherwood School in Rothesay, New Brunswick, Trinity College, Toronto, the University of Chicago. And Columbia School of Journalism in New York.

Patricia Pearson has written for magazines such as The New Yorker, Toronto Life, Reader’s Digest and Business Week. Her newspaper work has appeared in The Globe and Mail. The Toronto Star, The New York Times, National Post, The Guardian, and The Daily Telegraph. She’s also written for CBC Television, The History Channel and TVOntario.

Patricia Pearson resigned her weekly column at the National Post in 2003 to protest that newspaper’s support for the Bush administration in the lead-up to the Iraq war. Her subsequent satirical writing has been hailed as “hysterically funny” by the Los Angeles Times and “highly amusing” by the New York Times. She has lived in New York City, Delhi and Moscow, and now resides in Toronto, Ontario with her husband and two children.

Geoffrey Arthur Holland Pearson:

He is the first and last son of Lester B Pearson and his first child. OC was a Canadian diplomat and author. He was the son of former Prime Minister of Canada Lester B. Pearson and Maryon Pearson.

Born in Toronto, Geoffrey study at Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario, the University of Toronto, and the University of Oxford. Geoffrey joined the department of External Affairs in 1952 (now called Global Affairs Canada). He held diplomatic appointments at the Canadian embassies in Paris and Mexico City, and at the high commission in New Delhi. From 1980 to 1983, he served as Canada’s ambassador to the Soviet Union. He was also Ambassador to Mongolia from 1980 to 1981.

In late 1983, Geoffrey was appointed as a special representative to then Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau for arms control, and in 1984 he was seconded to the Canadian Institute of International Affairs. Therefore, in January 1985 he was appointed as the first executive director of the Canadian Institute for International Peace and Security, where he served for six years. In 1996, his book Seize the Day was publish, chronicling his father’s (Lester B. Pearson) diplomatic legacy. Geoffrey was a past president of the United Nations Association in Canada. In 2000, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Geoffrey died in Ottawa, Ontario. He is survive by his wife, Senator Landon Pearson (served 1994–2005), and their five children (Michael, Hilary and Anne), including journalist Patricia Pearson. Geoffrey was the second of three members of his family to serve in Canada’s diplomatic service. His father was Secretary of State for External Affairs and his son Michael Pearson is a senior civil servant.
