Express Entry

For those unfamiliar with Canada’s Express Entry system, it is a federal government immigration selection system that enables Canadian companies to find skilled workers and foreign nationals to apply for Canadian permanent residence from anywhere in the world. At its most basic level, it allows skilled workers who are eligible for permanent residence in Canada and have submitted an expression of interest (EOI) under one or more categories in order to receive an invitation from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)to apply for permanent residence.

Basics

Express Entry is a fast-track immigration process for skilled immigrants who can help Canadian employers fill gaps in their talent pool. If you meet Canada’s criteria for economic immigration and have at least one year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) work experience in Canada, you could be eligible for Express Entry.

Although government policies, processing times, and economic conditions can all change at any time, there are no plans to make significant changes to Express Entry before July 1, 2023. That said, it’s important that you stay up-to-date on these developments by checking out our website regularly so that your application will be as strong as possible when it reaches our officers in 2023 or later.

An Overview of the New Rules

The proposed changes are minor. Candidates will still need a minimum score of 67 in their core CRS scores and 4 additional points for education, work experience, or French-language ability. The major difference is that candidates will be able to enter two draws instead of one per year, effectively doubling their chance at success over time.

Once a candidate receives an invitation to apply (ITA), they’ll have 60 days to submit an application and pay their visa fee before being removed from Canada’s Express Entry pool.

Track your progress with an Assessment Score

After you create your Express Entry profile, CIC will assign you an Assessment Score. The higher your score, the more likely you are to receive an invitation for permanent residence in Canada. The highest score possible is 600 points and it’s broken down into four categories: Language Proficiency (maximum 24 points), education (maximum 24 points), experience (maximum 28 points), and other considerations (maximum 10 points).

If you meet a pass mark—49 or more on a scale of 1-100 in each category—you may be invited to apply for permanent residence. However, even if you don’t make that threshold, your application could still be processed if there is space in Canada’s immigration system. So keep applying!

How does your profile rank?

If you’re interested in immigrating to Canada, it’s important that you understand Express Entry and how your profile ranks under each category. The rankings are based on two main factors: 1) Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points, which account for your work experience, language proficiency, education, and age; 2) provincial/territorial (P/T) points—which will vary depending on where you live.

For instance, if you live in Ontario with a completed higher education degree, 6 P/T points will be awarded (meaning they count towards your CRS ranking). If you live in British Columbia with a high school diploma as your highest level of education, no P/T points will be awarded.

How do I prepare for an invitation to apply?

It is important that you have proper documentation and are in good standing with IRCC. If you receive an invitation, it will provide a time-limited opportunity for which you must apply within 60 days. Once your application is received by IRCC. It will be evaluated on a number of factors including but not limited to: education, work experience, language ability, and job offers. If selected as a candidate for Canadian permanent residence. Your application may be referred by IRCC for further assessment or processing by CIC.

It is important that you keep your personal information updated with IRCC. And ensure that you’re ready for an invitation to apply should one be issued. If your information changes, contact IRCC as soon as possible. The quicker IRCC has up-to-date information on you. Such as a new address or occupation. The sooner they can get in touch if an invitation is forthcoming. Remember: only apply when invited and make sure you have everything together before applying.

In Conclusion

The year 2023 brought about huge changes for Canada’s Express Entry system. It’s entirely possible we could see more in 2024. How will these changes affect your application? You’re job prospects if you get through? There’s still a lot we don’t know, but, by keeping an eye on developments, you can stay one step ahead.
