A mobile application, most commonly referred to as an app, is a type of application software designed to run on a mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet computer. Mobile applications frequently serve to provide users with similar services to those accessed on PCs. The native mobile application is the kind of app in which it is created and developed for a specific type of device platforms such as Android or IOS, using a specialized coding language. Another common example of the native mobile apps that everyone knows is Facebook.
About Mobile Apps
However, we are going to explain what mobile app it’s, and the types.
Mobile App is a process by which a computer program or software application designed to run on a mobile device such as a phone, tablet, or watch. It frequently stand in contrast to desktop applications which are create to run on desktop computers, and web applications which run in mobile web browsers rather than directly on the mobile device.
Apps were originally intended for productivity assistance such as email, calendar, and contact databases, but the public demand for apps caused rapid expansion into other areas such as mobile games, factory automation, GPS and location-based services, order-tracking, and ticket purchases, so that there are now millions of apps available. Many apps require Internet access. Apps are generally downloaded from app stores, which are a type of digital distribution platforms.

The term “app”, short for “software application”, has since become very popular; in 2010, it was listed as “Word of the Year” by the American Dialect Society.
To my count, there are 6 defining categories that you need to understand before you begin developing your app. Determining where your mobile app idea fits is an important step toward making your idea into a reality.
Read on, and I’ll outline the 6 major types of mobile apps to help you determine in which category your mobile app belongs.
Plus—as establishing a base of regular users is vital to an app’s successful monetization—I’ll be sharing advice about the goals of each app to improve the user experience and retain your users.
The 6 Main Types of Mobile Apps
- Lifestyle Mobile Apps
- Social Media Mobile Apps
- Native apps
- News, Information and Education Outlets Mobile Apps
- Entertainment apps
- Web Apps
1. Lifestyle Mobile Apps
A lifestyle app is one that accelerates or supports the individual facets that define your lifestyle. By this I mean those types of mobile apps related to: Fitness. Dating. Food. Lifestyle apps have come on strong in recent years. A lifestyle app is one that accelerates or supports the individual facets that define your lifestyle. By this I mean those types of mobile apps related to:
The beauty of these apps is that once they’re a part of a user’s lifestyle repertoire, they’re likely there for good. These are the apps that people turn to on a daily basis to help them find the next new song, restaurant, or destination. They’re the apps that help them find themselves, what they like and dislike, and where they’re heading next.
At the risk of getting a little too deep, I’ll stop there. If you’re developing a lifestyle app, you’ll need to do something to wow your user. Something that your competitors don’t do. Something your users just can’t live without.
Some examples of Lifestyle apps are:
2. Social Media Mobile Apps
Social media apps are some of the most popular types of mobile apps available. We build our social networks, and most of us check in with them every day. Facebook alone reports over 1 billion active daily users. Naturally, we want to have the ease of access a mobile app provides. Social media apps have to be fun, fast, and continually integrating the expanding features of the social networks they support.
Today’s society shares more about their day-to-day lives than ever before. For that reason, even apps that don’t necessarily fall under the social media category may want to include social sharing functionality. For an example, let’s look at the popular running and cycling app, Strava. It not only tracks your activities but allows you to compare your stats with other people in your network (and even strangers). You can essentially form an online running partnership or even an entire team without ever meeting face to face.
Many other apps allow you to share a product, high score, or news item with your social network. They make it easy for their users to share something they feel passionate about without having to leave the app. Consider adding social sharing features to your app if you will be providing a service or selling a product that your users can share with their networks. This functionality will keep your users coming back to share again and again while comparing with their networks.
Some common social media apps are:
3. Native Apps
Native apps are built specifically for a mobile device’s operating system (OS). Thus, you can have native Android mobile apps or native iOS apps, not to mention all the other platforms and devices. Because they’re built for just one platform, you cannot mix and match – say, use a Blackberry app on an Android phone or use an iOS app on a Windows phone.
Technology Used: Native apps are coded using a variety of programming languages. Some examples include: Java, Kotlin, Python, Swift, Objective-C, C++, and React.
Pros: Because of their singular focus, native apps have the advantage of being faster and more reliable in terms of performance. They’re generally more efficient with the device’s resources than other types of mobile apps. Native apps utilize the native device UI, giving users a more optimized customer experience.
And because native apps connect with the device’s hardware directly, they have access to a broad choice of device features like Bluetooth, phonebook contacts, camera roll, NFC, and more.
Cons: However, the problem with native apps lies in the fact that if you start developing them, you have to duplicate efforts for each of the different platforms. The code you create for one platform cannot be reused on another. This drives up costs. Not to mention the effort needed to maintain and update the codebase for each version.
And then, every time there’s an update to the app, the user has to download the new file and reinstall it. This also means that native apps do take up precious space in the device’s storage.
4. News, Information and Education Outlets Mobile Apps
News and information apps are pretty straightforward. They supply their users with the news and information they’re looking for in an easy to understand layout that efficiently navigates them to the things they care about most.
Educational and informative apps do just that–educate and inform. While the purpose of this type of app is fairly straightforward, there is a lot of diversity when it comes to educational apps, like news and language apps. If you’re looking to break into this crowded space, you’ll need to serve up news or other information in a fun and unique format for learners of all ages, interests, and levels.
Examples of different types of popular news apps are:
- Google News & Weather
- Yahoo News Digest
These are the biggest names in news, and they all deliver something different. If you’re developing a news app, you’ll need to find a unique way to communicate with your users, because, let’s face it, the news will all be the same…it’s news.
Your opportunity to shine is in the way you deliver it. Create something unique and tie it into the type of news you’ll be reporting on to give it that special something your users are looking for.
5. Entertainment apps
This category of apps has one sole focus–keeping you busy. Entertainment apps are often used to fill your time, whether you’re jet-setting across the country, lounging at home, or really anywhere in-between. Along with their websites, a lot of popular streaming services have mobile applications so users can access their library wherever they are. Entertainment apps can include video, text, or audio content.
You may be familiar with the Amazon Kindle e-reader, but there’s also a kindle app for users that don’t have actual hardware itself. This way, more people can download a book from the store and read it on their own device, significantly widening the service’s customer base. Entertainment apps comprise a wide range of interactive activities from purely leisure apps (music, playing games) to communication apps (social media, streaming media, instant messaging).
Other examples of entertainment apps:
6. Web Apps
Web apps behave similarly to native apps but are accessed via a web browser on your mobile device. They’re not standalone apps in the sense of having to download and install code into your device. They’re actually responsive websites that adapt its user interface to the device the user is on. In fact, when you come across the option to “install” a web app, it often simply bookmarks the website URL on your device.
One kind of web app is the progressive web app (PWA), which is basically a native app running inside a browser. For a deeper discussion on PWAs, read: What are Progressive Web Apps and Are They Worth It?
Types of Web Apps
- Static Web Apps.
- Dynamic Web Apps.
- Single Page Apps.
- Multiple Page Apps.
- Animated Web Apps.
- Content Management Systems.
- E-commerce Web Apps.
- Portal Apps.
Pros: Because it’s web-based, there is no need to customize to a platform or OS. This cuts down on development costs.
Plus, there’s nothing to download. They won’t take up space on your device memory like a native app, making maintenance easier – just push the update live over the web. Users don’t need to download the update at the app store.
Cons: But this is also pertinent: web apps are entirely dependent on the browser used on the device. There will be functionalities available within one browser and not available on another, possibly giving users varying experiences.
And because they’re shells for websites, they won’t completely work offline. Even if they have an offline mode, the device will still need an internet connection to back up the data on your device, offer up any new data, or refresh what’s on screen.
