Confucius Institute Scholarship Application Process are Now Open

Pursue your studies China. Good news! Scholarship opportunities are currently available through the Confucius Institute. In this article, we will provide a comprehensive explanation of the Confucius Institute Scholarship, including its many advantages as well as the application procedure, which is broken down step by step.

Confucius Institute Scholarship

International students are eligible to apply for the Confucius Institute Scholarship 2023-2024, which comes with a full funding package. More than 150 universities in China are participating in this scholarship program, which allows students to study Chinese language and culture there. The CIS scholarship provides full coverage of tuition and room and board costs, as well as medical insurance and a stipend to be used for living expenses each month.

Students coming from all over the world apply for these scholarships in large numbers every year. The mission of the Confucius Institute, which is a government-sponsored organization, is to broaden people’s understanding of Chinese language and culture all over the world.

Scholarships are available from the Confucius Institute for certain doctoral studies, research stays, participation in international conferences, as well as Chinese language and culture classes. You can take a look at this page if you are interested in the postgraduate and research scholarships that are currently being offered.

Scholarships Offered by the Confucius Institute in 2023 and Their Benefits

A scholarship from the Confucius Institute will cover your tuition and housing costs (in a university residence, in a room shared with another person), as well as provide you with basic medical insurance and a monthly stipend to put toward personal expenses. The breakdown of these benefits is as follows:

  • 2,500 Yuan per month for BTCSOL students or Chinese language and culture course (about 350 USD / month).
  • 3,000 Yuan per month for MTCSOL students (equivalent to about 420 USD / month).

Recently, there has been discussion about whether or not recipients of scholarships should be required to live on campus and should instead find housing elsewhere rather than in university housing. In these circumstances, the Confucius Institute provides an additional 700 Yuan per month on top of the monthly allowance in order to assist with the costs of renting a place.

In the case of scholarships that are awarded for a period of time longer than one year, the Confucius Institute performs an annual evaluation of the qualifications obtained by the awardees and requires exceptional performance in order to continue providing full funding for the subsequent academic year. If the student’s performance is not deemed to be superior to that of their peers, the Confucius Institute will not renew the scholarship and may, in some instances, only provide partial funding (which covers all expenses except the monthly allowance for personal expenses). In addition, the Confucius Institute will pay for your international flight of arrival and departure to and from China, provided that you are a citizen of a country that is eligible for this benefit.

The Confucius Institute Scholarship’s Eligibility Requirements and Time Commitment

Scholarships for the study of the Chinese language and culture. There are three different kinds:

  • Scholarships that cover a full academic year consist of a total of eleven months and can begin either in September (and continue until July of the following year) or in March (until January of the following year).
  • Awards of financial assistance for one academic semester: The scholarship will be awarded to the recipient for a total of five months. It could be the semester that begins in September and ends in January (winter), or it could be the semester that begins in March and ends in July (summer).
  • Scholarships to attend classes for a period of four weeks: In China, one-month classes are typically held during the country’s winter holidays (December-January) or during the country’s summer holidays (July-August) (July-August).

Scholarships for future teachers of Chinese.

There are three different modes of operation:

  • Award for graduate study leading to the Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) degree: It spans the course of two academic years.
  • A scholarship covering the cost of one academic year of Chinese language and culture plus the cost of two years of MTCSOL: There are a total of three different academic classes.
  • Financial assistance to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (BTCSOL): It lasts for the equivalent of four academic terms.

The beginning of the academic year for each of the three CIS scholarships to train Chinese language teachers is typically in September or March. The submission of your application for these fellowships must be done through the online system. During the application process, the system will provide you with the opportunity to select, in descending order of preference, two universities from the pool of one hundred fifty universities located across the country that provide this scholarship.

Check out the schools that are affiliated with the Confucius Institute Scholarship (you’ll need to register first in order to access all of the information, which is available in both Chinese and English) and locate the program that best suits your needs (not all universities offer all the modalities mentioned above).

How to Apply

Please follow the steps below to apply for a Confucius Institute Scholarship:

  • Application deadline: Until the beginning of May (usually day 1) if you want to start in September, or until the beginning of November if you want to start in March.
  • Application delivery: If you are a Confucius Institute student (ideal for applying for this scholarship), contact the scholarship coordinator. The application must be submitted online through the Confucius Institute scholarships page (you need to have all the documents scanned, including your passport and a passport size photo).
    • Then you must submit all of the necessary paper documents (preferably certified copies, since they will not be returned). The person in charge of your Confucius Institute’s scholarships will be responsible for mailing them to Hanban’s headquarters (central offices of the Confucius Institute in China). If you are not a Confucius Institute student, you can apply online and send your documents to the nearest Confucius Institute, a Chinese embassy or consulate in your country, or some exam centers or educational institutions affiliated with Hanban.
  • Date of final results: The final results of the scholarship students can be found on the official page of the Confucius Institute scholarships at the beginning of July (if you are starting in September) or the beginning of January (if you start in March).

  • Sending documents for visa processing: The necessary documents for visa processing are mailed within 15 days of the result’s publication. I recommend patience at this point in the procedure because you may have to wait more than a month to receive the letter.

Conclusion

The Confucius Institute Scholarship application process is now open and provides a great opportunity for international students to gain an education in China. The scholarship covers tuition fees, accommodation, living expenses and travel costs to ensure that no student has to miss out on this amazing experience due to financial limitations. With the increasing popularity of Chinese culture around the world, there’s never been a better time for international students to apply for this fantastic opportunity. We highly recommend taking advantage of it!
