1. Age Requirements

  • You must be at least 16 years old to join the Army as a solider.
  • You must be enlisted before your 36th birthday.
  • If you’re under 18, you will need consent from your parent or guardian.

2. Nationality Requirements

  • If you are a Commonwealth citizen, then you must have permission to be in the UK.
  • You don’t need to have UK residency to start your application.
  • You must possess a passport that is valid for at least 2 years from your starting date.
  • Refugees and asylum seekers are not eligible to join the British Army.

3. Fitness Requirements

The Bleep Test

The Bleep Test requires candidates to run between two lines, in time with a bleeping sound. The bleeps get faster as time progresses. When you can no longer keep in time with the bleeps, the test will be over.

  • Male candidates will need to reach a level of 10.2.
  • Female candidates will need to reach a level of 8.1.

Sit Ups

  • You must be able to perform 50 sit ups in two minutes.

Press Ups

  • Male candidates will need to perform 44 press ups in two minutes.
  • Female candidates will need to perform 21 press ups in two minutes.

4. Education Requirements

  • To join the Army as a soldier, you do not require any educational qualifications.
  • More technical roles will require qualifications.

5. Criminal Convictions

  • Having a criminal conviction might affect your application.
  • However, the Army will examine your application, and may permit you based on the type of offence and when it was committed.
  • If you are a Commonwealth citizen, then bear in mind that some criminal offences might prevent you from living in the UK.

6. Tattoos and Appearance

The Army does allow for tattoos and body piercings, but there are some exceptions:

  • Any candidates with tattoos on their face, throat, or front of their ears will not be eligible.
  • Candidates with offensive or inflammatory tattoos will not be permitted to join the Army.
  • Candidates with piercings must ensure that all of their piercings can be removed. If not, they will not be eligible to join the Army.
