While some jobs in Canada does require a work permit, some jobs in Canada does not require a work permit. Now, just before we go into listing these jobs that does not require work permit, let’s understand the concept of work permit. The definition of a job is the work you do to earn money. An example of a job is working at a gas station. Job is defined as the place where you go to work and earn money. An example of your job is the office and staff that you work with each day.
What Is Work Permit?
A work permit in its simplest term, is the permission to take a job within a foreign country. Depending on the situation, work permits can be necessary for minors who aim to work. These permits will allow minors to legally work under child labour laws. A work permit is an official document that authorizes its holder to seek and take employment in a foreign country legally. Employers are always required to verify that an individual whom they plan to employ or continue to employ in the United States has a valid work permit.
The application process for obtaining a U.S. work permit (also called an employment authorization document or EAD) is fairly straightforward. You need to fill out a one-page form, attach the fee, photos, and documents proving you’re eligible, and submit it to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
Judging by the explanation given above, it’s okay to say that work permits in needed in Canada for you to be able to work in Canada. While that’s true, it isn’t exactly the case. A hot work permit is used to prevent fire or explosion and will specifically detail the work to be carried out, how and when it is to be done and the precautions to be taken. The use of a permit system does not, by itself, make the job safe.
Common types of hot work include:
- Welding, brazing, and soldering.
- Grinding and cutting.
- Thawing pipes.
- The use of open flames, blow-lamps, and torches.
- Using bitumen and tar boilers.
- The use of hot air blowers and lead heaters.
Cold Work Permits
Cold work permits are use in hazardous maintenance work that does not involve “hot work”. It is are issue when there is no reasonable source of ignition, and when all contact with harmful substances has be eliminated or appropriate precautions taken.
Cold working refers to the process of strengthening a metal by plastic deformation. Also referred to as work hardening, the metal working technique involves subjecting metal to mechanical stress so as to cause a permanent change to the metal’s crystalline structure.

Examples of cold-rolled products include steel sheets, strips, bars, and rods. Bending of sheet metal is another process for cold working, which involves deforming metal over a work axis, thereby creating a change in the geometry of the metal.
Confined Spaces Work Permits
The confined space permit assists the employer to make sure that adequate precautions are in place for each job or task involving confined spaces. The Working At Heights Permit to Work allows you and your contractor to consider and record all the hazards connected with the work they are going to conduct along with the necessary precautions that must be taken.
Excavation Permit means the permit which, pursuant to this ordinance, must be obtain before a person may excavate in a right-of-way. An Excavation permit allows the holder to excavate that part of the right-of-way describe in such permit.
Excavation permit is require for carrying out any excavation inside plant. Wherever temporary closure of road / cutting of road or blockage of main roads is require in a section or unit. The necessary approval shall be obtaine in proper format for “Road or Site Closure”.
