  • Possess adequate travel health insurance.

The Top 10 Best Farm Jobs in Australia and How to Apply

Sometime in the future, you’ll be looking for some farm jobs to help pay your bills or just to supplement your income, and if you’re like me, you’ll want to take the most profitable job that best fits your skill set. Because of this, I spent some time researching Australia’s top 10 best farm jobs based on average salary and skill requirements using data from the Australian Farm Institute (AFI).

Here are my results:

1) Dairy Farmer

Dairy farmers are responsible for managing a herd of dairy cows by ensuring they are fed, milked, housed, and cared for daily. To find these positions you can use job search sites like Indeed or Farmer Job Search; you can also check out regional newspapers or talk to friends who might be aware of openings.

If you’re interested in farm work that isn’t specifically dairy, try contacting agribusiness companies directly. Farmers usually appreciate help during peak periods, like harvest time. Continue Reading.

2) Plant and Livestock Farmer

Did you know there are farm jobs that focus specifically on crops or livestock? If you prefer one over another, then farm jobs for plant and livestock farmers are for you. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projected a 2% increase in employment growth for these positions between 2016 and 2026.

With 3,000 employed in 2010, BLS estimated there would be an additional 1,000 jobs added by 2020. If a stable career with lots of opportunities is what you’re looking for, becoming a plant or livestock farmer might be your perfect job! Continue Reading.

3) Mixed Crop and Livestock Farmer

A mixed farm is a great way to earn income from land that isn’t very productive as a single crop. By growing multiple types of crops on your land, you can harvest throughout different seasons and sell your produce at different times.

Because of its shorter growth time, corn will be ready for harvest before alfalfa would even have time to establish itself; so if you decide to plant both products (which is an option when considering a mixed crop-livestock operation), you could get two harvests from one of the pieces of land in a single year. 4) Crop Farmer

A crop farmer grows plants that are used for food, natural fibers, or as raw materials for manufactured products. Crops may be either eaten fresh or used as feedstock for industrial use, for instance, food processing or manufacturing of biofuels.

A crop is considered harvested when it can no longer grow. In 2018 around 30% of global arable land was dedicated to grain production alone; other crops such as potatoes, soybeans, and maize are also major products worldwide. Some non-farmers such as gardeners grow small quantities of fruits, vegetables, and herbs for personal consumption on their property. This type of farming is called market gardening. 5) Beef Cattle Farmer

If you’re thinking about a career as a beef cattle farmer, there are several things you need to keep in mind. First of all, be prepared for hard work. In order to make your farm profitable, you have to do everything yourself—there’s no time for naps when there are steers that need castrating!

But on top of being hardworking, being a beef cattle farmer also means having a little bit of luck on your side. Continue Reading.

6) Sheep Producer

As a sheep producer, you’ll be responsible for managing small herds of sheep. Typically, a sheep farm will have two or three flocks – one ready for shearing, and one that has just been shorn. To keep track of your stocks as well as ensure optimal growth rates of your flock, it’s important to take into account all aspects of animal health including nutrition.

You’ll need to make sure that your animals are board properly and are safe from predators. During summer months it can get very hot on farms so you may need to consider irrigation methods as well as shade solutions for your stock. Continue Reading.

7) Grain, Oilseed, or Pasture Grower

Some farmers choose to specialize in one specific crop, such as grain or oilseed crops. Alternatively, you can also choose to grow a diverse range of produce on your farm, such as cereals (wheat), grains (oats), legumes (lentils), and/or oilseeds (sunflower).

By growing a wide variety of products, you can maximize your yields across various types of farmlands. If you’re looking for job opportunities across a diverse range of cropping practices, take a look at career opportunities with Grain Producers Australia. Continue Reading.

8) Horticulturalist

The green thumb isn’t just for gardeners. Horticulturalists develop, care for, maintain, research, propagate, diagnose problems with and analyze plant life at nurseries or gardening-related facilities. They also work closely with farmers who grow crops.

Horticulturalists must have a high school diploma as well as two years of training. Many then complete two years of on-the-job experience before going on to earn an associate degree from an accredited horticulture program. Continue Reading.

9) Beekeeper

Keeping bees on a farm is an excellent job for anyone who loves nature, although it does come with some responsibilities. Bees tend to be calm creatures as long as they’re left alone, but if you have a history of severe allergies or asthma, it might not be your best choice.

You’ll also need to make sure your land has enough flowers, grasses, and trees that attract bees; they do need to feed themselves after all! You should also find out whether you’ll get permits from local authorities before installing hives. Beekeeping jobs are available at many farms across rural Australia, so check with farms near you. 10) Vegetable Grower

With global demand for fresh produce rising, now is a great time to get into agriculture. A vegetable grower typically works with a company that supplies seeds, fertilizer, and equipment—in exchange for labor on their farm. Once your crops are ready for harvesting (usually about 6–8 months after planting).
